New Student Guide
Hello and welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and, for some of you, to the Wizarding World itself. Your journey starts here. Before you can get onto the Hogwart's Express, you'll need to read through this entire guide. There will be three secret words to find throughout this guide, and you will have to do two things when you have finished reading it.
Please sign your name by replying with your full display name to the Site Rules & Guidelines thread acknowledging that you've read and agreed to the rules of the forum.
PM (or owl) the three secret words to the Headmaster or the Head Boy or Head Girl. We will then give you the password to the Hogwart's Express board.

What is Dream Dwellers?
Dream Dwellers is a site created for Harry Potter fan fiction writers and readers and fans alike.
A lot of time was spent trying to figure out a way to make this new site just as exciting and engaging as various other fan fiction forums. After a lot of intense thought on the subject, the site creator, Lia, decided to set up the entire site in a Hogwarts style format, strengthening the idea of living in a community of friends and being able to interact both on a writing/reading/roleplaying basis.
This site offers everything from games to contests, fanfic submission, and in-depth roleplays. You can purchase everything from pets to train rides, potions ingredients to wands, adorn your characters in new clothes and hair styles, and even petition to start your own clubs for your personal interests like music, movies, and games.
Together, Dream Dwellers is a place for all sorts of Harry Potter fans to create online lives and have as much fun as possible with their friends.
We hope that you enjoy yourself here and continue to come for years in the future.

Site Members & Rankings
Headmaster
The Headmaster is the owner of the site. They are the top dogs and the ones who make the final decision on everything. There is nothing in Dream Dwellers that they don't keep an eye on and they are the number one person you can go to if you need help with anything.
The Head of House is a position for one person per House. They are the ones who oversee all that goes on around their House and the students in it. The Head of your House is a great person to go to if you need help or to ask questions about the forum.
Current Heads of House:
Ravenclaw
Hufflepuff
Gryffindor
Slytherin
Head Boy / Head Girl
The Head students are two people assigned to watch over Hogwarts on every level. They also keep an eye on the Village of Hogsmeade and ensure that everyone is following the rules.
Current Head Boy:
Current Head Girl:
Prefects
Prefects are staff members who are assigned to large areas specifically to moderate. For instance, a prefect may be assigned solely to watch over the Fifth and Sixth floors. They help keep the site organized, fun, and efficient.
Current Prefects:
Professors
Professors are people who focus on specific classes at Hogwarts. One teacher could be a professor of several different classes or double as a Head of House. These are the people that moderate class boards.
All staff members are able to view all boards, including ones that have a post count requirement. This is a privilege given to staff members for their hard work.
RANKINGS
Member rankings are determined by post count, so how many posts you have will raise your ranking.
Why are rankings important?
Well, not only are they a symbol of respect and activity, but they also get you into certain areas of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade that will only allow you if your ranking is high enough, so you definitely want to get your ranking higher so that you can access all places of Dream Dwellers!

When you've reached 1,200 posts, you will no longer have a further rank name, but you will earn wages for every 1,000 posts you make. For instance, when you reach 2,000 posts, you will earn 150 sickles every two weeks until you reach 3,000 posts. Then, you will earn 200 sickles every two weeks. And so on...
REPUTATION
The rep system here on Dream Dwellers is a way for members to weed out the troublemakers from the exemplary students. The more reputation points you have, the easier it is to get into clubs and participate in contests. Some clubs and contests have a minimum number of rep points in order to join or participate.
Reputation Ranks are as follows:

To give someone reputation points, press the Revere link underneath their rep points in their mini-profile. If you feel that someone is being rude, mean, or is breaking the rules of the forum, click the Rebuke link. Be very careful that you do not rebuke someone unnecessarily. All rebukes are investigated by forum staff.

Different Places of Dream Dwellers
Muggle London
Hogwarts Letter: This is the area where the New Student Guide is located, along with the required Student Supply List. You will need to read through both of these threads before you can even think about moving on to any other boards.
King's Cross Station: This is the second most important board in the forum. The rules must be signed by every student before they make their way to the train.
Platform 9¾: This is the board where new students can chat with current students and where we welcome you to the Wizarding World.
Hogsmeade
Hogwarts Express: Your trip on the Hogwarts Express is essential in order to move on to Hogwarts School. In order to make your trip, you will need to post your own Compartment thread and roleplay a little. When you make it to the rank of First Year, you will be granted access to Hogwarts. (word: niffler)
Village of Hogsmeade: The village is only accessible to Third Years and up. Hogsmeade is full of fun and excitement, including The Three Broomsticks, Zonko's and Honeyduke's. Here you can talk socially and play games. If you want to change anything about your character, go to Gladrags Wizardwear to purchase new clothes, hair styles, etc.
Hogwarts
You will learn more about the different levels of Hogwarts as you explore. You will be able to sign up for and participate in lessons here. You will also have access to your specific House's common room once you are Sorted. You can post fan fiction, play games, join clubs, as well as a host of other fun activities.
Headmaster's Office: This area is only accessible to staff members.
Staff Postings: This is where you can apply to become a staff member at Dream Dwellers. Read over the postings carefully. There are some requirements you must meet before applying.
Ministry of Magic
You will learn more about the Ministry once you have graduated from Hogwarts, but within you will be able to choose an occupation, explore the Department of Mysteries, and take steps to becoming an Animagus if you so choose. Explore all that the Ministry has to offer and perhaps you'll find your calling.
Magical Neighborhoods
These are places where Hogwarts graduates can purchase homes and have neighborly socializing, parties and roleplaying of all kinds in the Village Squares. If you reach graduation rank, feel free to go to Nova's Plottables in order to purchase a home deed for any of the magical locations shown.
Magical Locations
Here you will find a host of different areas that you can go to find magical creatures to fight, places to explore, and goals to achieve. Be careful, though! You could run into a dark wizard or an angry Acromantula. Always have your wand at the ready when you're venturing in these locations.

Names & Characters
Display Names
If you want to become a member of Dream Dwellers, you are going to become a student at Hogwarts. Therefore, you must have an appropriate display name that suits that criteria. Suitable display names have both a first and a last name. They should not be your own name, and they should not be a Harry Potter canon character's name. I have blocked most of the HP fandom character names already on this site, but if you happen to choose one that is not blocked but is canon, you will be asked to change it.
Perhaps you don't know of any names that you could use. Please use a name generator as many times as you wish to come up with a name that would be suitable for a Hogwarts student. Reminder: Only the display name needs to be this way. You can have whatever username you would like, so long as it's appropriate.
Character Avatars
Please visit the Character Creation thread in Platform 9¾. You will be able to choose from six different default characters. As you continue on with your Hogwarts career, you will be able to choose different clothing, facial expressions, hair styles, etc., for your character.
This is what a character looks like. This is Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Grounds and Keys at Hogwarts.
Once you have purchased your wand from Ollivander's, a staff member will give your character a wand.

Currency, Bank & Shops
Sickles
Every thread creation, reply or quick reply will earn you sickles, so everything you participate in in Hogsmeade and Hogwarts will give you more money. The more sickles you have, the more you can spend in Diagon Alley, which will be described below.
Creating threads will give you the most sickles, but be careful! Some boards don't allow you to create your own threads, so be sure to read the rules before doing so. Replies and quick replies still earn you sickles, but less so. When you reach a new rank, you will receive a bonus 50 sickles.
Diagon Alley
You can shop from any shop in Diagon Alley at any point in time, if you have the sickles. In order to do so, all you need to do is click on the Diagon Alley link at the top of the navigation of the forum next to the Owlry. (word: thestral) Add things to your cart, check out with your basket and the items will show up in your profile page. Only staff can edit a member's items, but you yourself can refund or delete items from your own profile. Refunds are 50% of the original value, so you will only get half of what you paid for the item back. Be careful what you purchase!
Some items you can only purchase one of, such as pets, broomsticks and wands. If a staff member notices you have more than one of these, it will be deleted from your item storage in your profile and you will receive a warning.
Gringotts Wizard Bank
You can access the bank by going to the bottom left navigation bar and clicking on the piggy bank. It looks like this: . You can see how much money you have in your vault. If you have none, that just means that it is in your wallet instead. To transfer money from your wallet to your bank, go to Gringotts, type in the amount you would like to deposit and then click the Deposit button. Sickles kept in Gringotts earns you 2% interest.
Gifts & Donations
In order to give someone a gift or trade with them, you must click on the button in the lower left-hand navigation bar. This will provide you with access to the gift and trade tabs. You can trade certain items with other members and you can gift sickles to other members should you so wish.
If anyone harasses you asking you repeatedly for sickles or items in your item storage profile, report them immediately to the Headmaster and they will be subject to the punishments laid out in the code of conduct/rules.

Sorting & Classes
The Sorting Ceremony
Once you've posted in the Hogwarts Express and made it to the rank of First Year, you can go to the Great Hall on the Ground Floor of Hogwarts and read the Sorting Ceremony thread. This is an important part of your initiation into Hogwarts, so don't forget to do this. If you aren't Sorted, you can't participate in contests, classes or go to the Village of Hogsmeade.
Signing Up for Classes
If you are wanting to take a class at Hogwarts, you must first sign up for that class and be added to the roster, but I would advise looking over that classes' rules and guidelines before doing so. If you're added to the roster and the class has a timeline that needs to be met, you are expected to meet that deadline or fail the course. If you don't know the rules, how can you possibly know if you'll be able to complete the assignments on time?
Feel free to look through course lessons to see if you're willing to complete them. If you sign up for a class, you are expected to complete all lessons. Classes usually have about 4 lessons to complete. Some classes are all about writing fan fiction, some are about reviewing fan fiction, some are about reading fan fiction, and some have their own fun theme to them.
In order to discover which class does what, you'll have to explore the castle. Classes are spread out on all different floors.
You don't have to sign up for any classes at Hogwarts if you don't wish to, but these are a very fun part of what we do here at Dream Dwellers, so participating is half the fun!

Once You've Graduated...
Houses
In order to buy any home you must have enough money to purchase a home at that location. For instance, if you'd like to purchase a home in Godric's Hallow, you will need at least 20,000 sickles. To purchase that house, you will need to purchase the deed from Nova Plottables in Diagon Alley. If you are not a Hogwarts graduate yet, then you cannot purchase a house.
Homes are not only a method of keeping in touch with people and learning about them, but they are required if you want to start a family. Your Hogwarts diploma and any certificates you receive at Hogwarts will be kept in your house, as well. Your home is where you build your life after Hogwarts, so take good pride in your home.
Occupations
When you reach the rank of Hogwarts Graduate, you will be granted access to the Ministry of Magic. This area will allow you to explore the different occupations the Ministry has to offer. In short, the list is below.
Auror Daily Prophet Chief of Staff Daily Prophet Staff Writer Ministry Employee of various departments Quidditch Player Quidditch Referee Unspeakable
Having an occupation will earn you a certain amount of sickles every fortnight (two weeks). Inquire about wages on the appropriate staff opening threads. If you are staff on the forum, you will also get wages.
Although not an occupation but rather a part of who you are, you are able to request to become an Animagus on the forum. This means that you can transform into your Animagus form while roleplaying. If you would like to see what the steps of transformation entail, simply head on over to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement where the Animagus Registry is kept.
Marriage
You have the ability to get married to anyone on the site that you choose, meaning that same sex marriage is allowed. When you are married, you will live in the same house and even start your own family.
In order to get married, you must be a Hogwarts graduate (meaning you must have at least 4,800 posts) and you also must pay a small fee at the Courthouse in Diagon Alley. Each person in the relationship must buy a marriage license in order to be considered a married couple.
Once you get married, if you both already own a house, you will have to choose which one to give up and which one you will live in.
Don't get married without a lot of serious thinking! If you want to get a divorce, it costs a lot of money, so make sure you're marrying someone you truly want to be with.
If you are married to someone, you have the choice to take their surname as your own in your display name.
Families
You must be married in order to start a family and you can only be part of ONE family. A family consists of one married couple and up to TWO children. The children can also be married and have families of their own, so it's truly an endless line of families all knit together quite tightly.
Just like marriage, family registration takes place at the courthouse. It does cost money to get adoption papers, so make sure you have enough sickles to start your own family. More information about families and marriage can be found in Diagon Alley at the Courthouse.
Children can be adopted by married parents, but each parent must purchase adoption papers. Children must agree to be adopted by parent(s) before adoption papers are purchased.
When a child is adopted by a parent, they cannot keep their old surname, but must choose to take one of their parents' surnames.

Fan Fiction Submissions & Links
This section is very simple. There are only a few simple rules that you need to follow when you're submitting fan fiction. You can submit fanfic throughout the site, but there are some rules to follow.
The main thing we worry about when it comes to graphics and fanfiction is the rating. We must make sure that adult content is properly labeled in your work. If your submission has ANY adult content, you must put "MATURE" in the rating field as well as this warning image at the top of your post:
The image is absolutely required if your fan fiction have any of the following.
Fanfiction Adult Content
Intensely foul language
ANY sexual content other than kissing
Murder, gore, or intense violence
Drug or alcohol use
Heavy adult subject matter (you be the judge)
Anything else that might be deemed inappropriate for those under the age of 13
Here at Dream Dwellers, we trust you will be a good judge of content. If we find that content has been poorly judged in its rating, there will be consequences, so don't be posting adult content without the proper ratings. We need to protect both the site and the youth on the site from content that might be inappropriate for the younger people on this site, so please take this rule very seriously.
The Rating System
E - Everyone -- Content that is safe for any age group
G - General -- Content suitable for age 13 and up
T - Teen -- Content suitable for age 16 and up
M - Mature -- Content suitable for age 18 and up
X - Restricted -- Content restricted to age 21 and up
Now, the ratings are only guidelines. We cannot stop younger people from reading mature content and we are not responsible if those underage should read the content that is properly labeled as mature.
If stuff isn't properly labeled, however, that's a problem and will be dealt with to a severe degree.
If you are posting ANY X-rated material, the only place you can post it is in the Restricted Section. Please be aware that the Restricted Section requires a permission slip from the Library.
Submitting Fan Fiction
Please do not attempt to submit fan fiction directly onto the forum. There is not enough space to hold that amount of data. For now, you will need to use a site such as livejournal, fanfiction.net or your personal website. Linkage requirements are as such:
Title: Rating: Word Count: Link: [a href=][/a] Brief Summary: This code goes for any place on the forum where you will submit your fan fiction. The Library is good place to start.

Dueling & Battles
DUELS
In order to duel, you must be in the Dueling Club. To sign up, go to the Fifth Floor of Hogwarts. When a duel is started, you may post using the quick reply only. You will be assigned a random number when you click the Duel! button. This will determine how much your spell succeeded. (word: werewolf)
The rules of fighting are as follows:
If your spell fails, you take a hit from your opponent.
If your spell succeeds, you deal a hit to your opponent.
If nothing happens, you and your opponent both miss and no damage is taken on either side.
In order to duel another player, you take turns attacking. Whoever receives 10 hits first loses the duel. Dueling is a fun way to earn money and get to know students in other Houses.
Editing duel posts is NOT ALLOWED. If you are caught editing a duel post, you will forfeit the duel and be banned from Dueling Club for 6 months. We don't mess around here.
BATTLES
Battling creatures or dark wizards/witches on Dream Dwellers is pretty simple. When you find a thread that has the first sentence of content as "LOOK OUT!", you will know that it's a battle thread. This is the order in which you should approach such a thread:
Post in the thread saying something similar to "I'm ready to fight."
The creature or dark wizard/witch will appear in a pop-up window. (If you have a pop-up blocker on, it might be a good time to make Dream Dwellers exempt from that blocker.) Click OK.
You will see the amount of hit points the creature has at the top of the thread. If the health points far outweigh your own, you might want to use the Retreat button. If not, use the Attack button where the Post button usually is located. Every creature has their own set amount of hit points, attack damage and probability that they will cause you damage.
You continue step 3 until the creature is dead.
Everyone starts off with 10 hit points. A member can gain hit points by being helpful to staff, winning contests, or participating in events. Your hit points are like your health. If you run out of hit points, you can no longer attack the creature. If you continue posting and the creature misses, you will gain 15% of your hit points back. If you decide to retreat, the creature will try to attack but will miss and you can safely back out of the battle thread and leave it for someone else to complete.
Battle threads will be present all throughout the forum, so be weary. If you don't want to participate in a battle, don't.
A Note on Posting
All battle thread posts must be in RP Mode. Speak in the third person past tense and please make it relevant to the current battle. Every battle thread post will require you to write something within the post before you use the Attack or Retreat buttons. If a staff member catches you using one-word posts within a battle thread, the sickles you earned for those posts will be deducted from your wallet.
Quick Reminder: You CAN fight monsters in groups, however, unless you are invited to join in by the first poster, you should not engage the creature.

Miscellaneous
What is "RP MODE"? RP mode, or "roleplay" mode, is a form of posting that you do like a story. It's in past tense, 3rd person, so, for example, this is what an RP post looks like if your name is, say, Jenna:
"Jenna walked into the room and looked around, spotting her friends and walking over to them. "Hi guys," Jenna said happily. "How are you?" She smiled and sat down with them."
Please note that all verbs are in 3rd person past tense, so it's not "walks", but "walked". Also, if your name is Jenna, you'd say "Jenna did this", not "I did this".
It has also been asked if you can roleplay in more than one place at a time. The answer is yes, you can. You can roleplay in as many different locations at once as you want to.
However, you cannot double post while roleplaying, and you cannot roleplay FOR someone else in the thread, meaning that you can't say something like this:
"Jenna walked into the room and Tom immediately smiled."
What is a PM/owl and how do I check them?
A PM is a "Private Message", but here on Dream Dwellers we call them "owls." It's something members can send each other, sort of like an on-site e-mail. You can check your owls by clicking the link that says Owlry in the top navigation bar.
Many important announcements and messages are sent via owl, so please check your inbox constantly to make sure no important messages have been sent to you.
How do I become a staff member?
Do NOT go around asking staff members if you can be staff. If you want to apply, then check the Staff Postings in the Staffroom to see if there are any openings and apply there.
I'm going to be honest with you. If you're a new member, the likelihood that you'll be hired is slim to none. I choose each staff member personally and I want people that I know and trust, so if you want to be staff here, be active, friendly, and get to know me. Make sure to show initiative and prove that you would be a good asset to our team.
A note on rule-breaking.
If you break a rule once, fine, if you do it twice, we get annoyed, but if you do it a third time, that's a black mark on your record for good. Don't break the rules, people. It makes other members dislike you
